Elections

If openings are available, elections for vacant Alberta Barley director and delegate positions are held at the regional meetings each year. Elected directors are eligible to serve two three-year terms. Eligible producers interested in filling a director position must fill out a nomination form by October 29 of the election year. In comparison, eligible producers interested in filling a delegate position can be nominated from the floor at their regional meeting. Delegate positions are up for election every two years. Elections will take place only if there are more nominees than available positions, with votes tabulated at the respective regional meetings.

Directors

Director responsibilities include attending Alberta Barley’s board meetings, annual general meeting, various committee meetings, and an annual regional meeting. Additionally, directors represent Alberta Barley on various third-party councils and committees as well as at numerous community and industry events. Eligible producers elect directors to represent them at the regional level, and elect directors-at-large to represent them at the provincial level.

Delegates

Delegate responsibilities include attending Alberta Barley’s annual general meeting every December, as well as an annual regional meeting every fall. Delegates may also be invited to represent Alberta Barley at community and trade events and on committees. Eligible producers elect the delegates.

If you’re an eligible barley producer interested in becoming a delegate or director, please contact us. These roles are vital to the organization’s success and its ability to understand and respond to the needs of Alberta’s barley producers.

Elections 2021

Alberta Barley will be seeking nominations for barley farmers to join the board of directors and delegate leadership team for 2021.

Director positions open for nomination include one director in Region 5, one director from Region 6 and one director-at-large from either regions 1, 3, 5 or 6.

Additionally, there are 18 delegate positions open between the six regions. Alberta Barley delegate positions available in each region include:

  • Region 1 – four delegate positions open for nomination;
  • Region 3 – four delegate positions open for nomination;
  • Region 4 – three delegate position open for nomination;
  • Region 5 – four delegate positions open for nomination; and
  • Region 6 – three delegate positions open for nomination.

All farmers running for a position must have produced barley in the region they are running for and paid a service charge on barley in the past two crop years. To run for the open director-at-large position, a farmer must grow barley in one of Regions 1, 3, 5 or 6.

Elections, if required, for director positions will take place at the corresponding regional meetings. If an election is required for the director-at-large position, votes will be collected at all six regional meetings through a traveling ballot box, which then will be tabulated and announced at Alberta Barley’s annual general meeting. All open delegate positions will be elected from the floor at each regional meeting. Regional meetings event information can be found on our events page

Multiple open barley delegate opportunities remain from 2020 elections that can be applied for ahead of 2021 elections. If barley farmers would like to apply for one of these open positions please contact Brian Kennedy at bkennedy@albertawheatbarley.com

Nomination forms will be available and must be returned in writing to the Alberta Barley office by Friday, October 29, 2021 by fax (403-717-1966), email at bkennedy@albertawheatbarley.com or mail (200-6815, 8 St NE, Calgary, AB, T2E7H7).
