Summary:
Kochia populations from more than 50 sites in Alberta and Saskatchewan have
been confirmed to be glyphosate-resistant. This research will provide new
information on the most efficacious and cost-effective alternative herbicides
to control kochia in pre-seed, chemfallow, in-crop and post-harvest
application. Knowledge gained from these glyphosate-resistant kochia studies
could aid in preventing or delaying the onset of glyphosate resistance in other
weed species.
Recent updates:
Kochia emerging in mid-July in Edmonton and mid-August in Lethbridge were
capable of producing viable seed before a killing fall frost; thus growers must
be diligent in controlling fall populations of kochia. New herbicides were
identified for kochia control and data was supplied for their registration in Canada.
Benefits for farmers:
Farmers will be informed on best management practices to control
glyphosate-resistant kochia, while simultaneously reducing the risk of
developing kochia resistance to other herbicide groups. Data will be used to
support registration of new herbicides to manage kochia in several crops,
including barley.
