Agronomy Extension Specialist

We have an exciting opportunity for an Agronomy Extension Specialist to join the Alberta Wheat and Barley Commissions in Calgary, Alberta. The Agronomy Extension Specialist will be responsible for working with farmers, taking information from the field and coordinating with the communications, policy and events teams to translate important and timely agronomic information and knowledge to farmers and producers. The Agronomy Extension Specialist bridges the communication, research and extension departments to ensure producers have the most up-to-date and relevant genetic and management information. The Extension Specialist will execute this through integration of knowledge from commission funded research projects and historically developed western Canadian agronomic research knowledge. This is a newly created position, will report into the Agronomy Research and Extension Manager and have a huge impact on building out the extension portfolio.


  • Coordinates and supports content development for the Alberta Wheat and Barley Commissions newsletter, The Growing Point .
  • Maintains continued knowledge of current agronomic challenges faces by Alberta farmers.
  • Works with the Agronomy Research and Extension Manager and communications department to develop agronomic articles, tech sheets, crop production resources, extension event knowledge materials, website tools, etc.
  • Works with the Agronomy Research and Extension Manager to develop new agronomic resources from recent commission funded research.
  • Assists in executing extension plans for funded research project results.
  • Presents the Alberta Wheat and Barley Commissions funded research to growers and industry stakeholders.
  • Participates in and develops content for trade shows and research events, as required.
  • Travel to and speak at agronomically focused field tours.
  • Works with research department to develop research summaries of funded agronomic research projects.
  • Develops strong working relationships with colleagues, researchers and industry.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Agronomy Research and Extension Manager.


  • Degree in agriculture, agronomy or related science program or similar field; masters an asset.
  • 4+ years of agronomic experience in western Canadian agriculture.
  • Current professional agronomist designation with a crop production or similar practice area.
  • Proven ability to translate scientific and technical writing and tailor it to a general audience.
  • Knowledge of Canadian agriculture, specifically field crop production.

  • Access to home office.
  • Ability to travel (up to 20%)
