FarmCash Program Finance Specialist

The organization

The Alberta Wheat and Barley Commissions is a provincial grower organization that represents 14,000 wheat and 11,000 barley farmers in Alberta, and invests in major program areas such as research, communications, extension, market development, farm business management and policy advocacy. This is a small, but dynamic team, and it organizational culture thrives on innovation and a spirit of entrepreneurialism.

FarmCash is a cash advance program administrated by the Alberta Wheat and Barley Commissions and offered through the Advance Payments Program. The Alberta Wheat and Barley Commissions is of of approximately 30 farm organizations across Canada who administer the Government of Canada Advanced Payments Program, which offers Canadian farmers marketing flexibility through interest-free and low interest cash advances. FarmCash is a simple, convenient program which offers loans of up to $1 million on over 50 agricultural commodities. 


  • Working within the strategic priorities of the Alberta Wheat and Barley Commissions as a whole, this position is part of a team responsible for executing the Advance Payments Program (APP) operations.
  • Review, assess and process FarmCash applications.
  • Ensure the advances are issued in an accurate, efficient, and timely manner.
  • Enter the advances into the database.
  • Register and cancel the security on a product through Personal Property Registry.
  • Responsible for tracking, monitoring, and collecting payments from producers.
  • Register the Business Risk Management assignments with Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC) or Global Ag Risk Solutions (GARS), Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation (SCIC), Manitoba Agriculture Services Corporation (MASC) &/or BC Production Insurance.
  • Follow up with applicants in regards to outstanding documents.
  • Prepare and issue monthly statements of accounts to producers.
  • Prepare and send reminders to producers on their accounts's status - outstanding balances (principal , interest, penalties) and proof of sales reminders.
  • Assist in preparation of monthly reports for submission to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC).
  • Enter monthly defaulted producer's penalties in AAFC's system.
  • Assist in performing all tasks necessary to achieve the FarmCash objectives and growth plans.
  • Monitor bank transactions daily and reconcile bank accounts monthly.
  • Prepare monthly reconciliations of Program Years accounts and submit to AAFC - monthly reconciliations include interest expense reconciliation, bank reconciliation, Banker's Acceptance (BA) reconciliation, advances reconciliation and repayments reconciliation.
  • Enter advances information into Great Plains software.
  • Maintain a filing systems for all advances.
  • Ensure the confidentiality and security of all financial and producer files.
  • Complete projects and tasks focusing on loan issuance, credit risk assessment, and related administrative responsibilities.
  • Production of monthly reports including reconciliations for use by Executive management.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the FarmCash Program Manager and FarmCash Customer Relations Managers or the Chief Operating Officer.


  • 2+ years of experience in lending/banking/financing.
  • Degree/Diploma in accounting of finance or business administration of equivalent experience.
  • Lender/Bank Account Manager experience.
  • Non-for-Profit experience would be asset.
  • A passion for agriculture and enjoy working in a diverse, flexible, and team-based environment.
