Research Manager

We have an exciting opportunity for a Research Manager to join the Alberta Wheat and Barley Commissions in Calgary, Alberta.  Reporting into the General Manager, the Research Manager will be responsible for ensuring the smooth administration, coordination and project management of the Alberta Wheat and Barley Commissions research, agronomic projects and commitments. The Research Manager will develop strong working relationships with, and is the liaison between, farmers, researchers, government, industry, funding organizations and other stakeholders. This position will also work closely with other members of the management team such as Finance, Communications and Events, Extension, Government Relations & Policy, Markets and the “GrainsWest Magazine” to ensure the overall success of the Commissions.

Working to further the strategic priorities of the Alberta Wheat and Barley Commissions, the Research Manager will evaluate and recommend projects in conjunction with the Research Committee and manage research-focused grant applications and processes at both the provincial and national level. This position works closely with the Board of Directors and Commissions staff to provide extension of research results, updates and information. The Research Manager will also participate in numerous research-related committees, projects and working groups, both at a provincial and national level.

Responsibilities 

  • Works with the Alberta Wheat and Barley Commissions staff to develop complementary provincial and national research programs.
  • Leads all aspects of research strategy, policy, and programming for both commissions.
  • Develops and maintains annual budgets for both commissions.
  • Works closely with the Board of Directors and Commissions extension staff to provide extension of research results, updates and information to barley and wheat growers.
  • In cooperation with the Chairs of the Research Committees, particularly the Canadian Wheat Research Coalition and Canadian Barley Research Coalition on research strategy and funding.
  • Liaises with industry associations, academic institutions and governement.
  • Oversees priority development and communication.
  • Develops and maintains student scholarship and mentorship opportunities.
  • Responsible for ensuring the smooth administration, coordination and project management of Alberta Wheat and Barley Commissions, grant-funded projects.
  • Establish strong working relationships and liaison with farmers, researcher, government, industry, funding organizations and other stakeholders.
  • Evaluates and recommends research and extension projects to the Board of Directors for funding, in conjunction with the research committee and manages research-focused grant applications and process at both provincial and national levels.
  • Participates in numerous research-related committees, projects and working groups at both provincial and national levels.
  • Represents the Commissions on Canadian Agriculture Partnership discussion (Clusters - Wheat, barley and Integrated Agronomy Clusters)
  • Monitors and reviews new and existing research project files for contract compliance and action.
  • Responsible for working with wheat and barley producers to establish research priorities for both commissions.
  • Coordinates all research-related contracts and administration of contracts.
  • Writes grants, assists with grant writing and works with outside grant writing/project coordinators. as required.
  • Ensures farmers are involved and knowledgeable about research.
  • Provides information and details on research projects to the COO, ad needed, for general tracking purposed, the year-end audit and the Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) tax incentive credit.
  • Prepares general summaries on research proposals and project updates for the Research Committee, the management team for the website.
  • Prepares and submits and executive summary report upon completion of research projects.
  • Responsible for staying within the research budget and works with the General Manager and COO on budgets for each fiscal year.
  • Works with the Communications and Events Manager on extension, including news articles, trade show materials, website updates. press releases, projects, etc.
  • Writes a regular research column in the newsletter.
  • Participates in trade shows and research events, as required.
  • Works with the communications and events staff on planning and coordinating research events including relevant conferences, regional meetings, etc.
  • Gives research presentations, as required.
  • Other duties as assigned by the General Manager.

Qualifications

  • Degree in agriculture or related science program or equivalent experience, Masters preferred.
  • 5+ years' experience in research
  • PhD would be an asset.
  • Certified Crop Advisor Program (CCA) certification would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of Canadian agriculture and the barley and wheat industry.
  • Experience developing and implementing projects and research programs.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to travel regularly.
